NFL Season 2017/2018: Teams Preview

New England Patriots: Still #1 favorite to win it all, according to both bookmakers and experts, being the reigning champions. They have the best quarterback in the league and the team is strong in all positions.

  • Key-players: Tom Brady QB, Rob Gronkowski (TE).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 13 or more.

Dallas Cowboys: The best running back of the past season, Elliot has been suspended for the first 6 games, but the decision is upheld (while the whole situation is being evaluated again), so he will be able to play on day one. The defense is very strong and the quarterback, Prescott is a great prospect (playing his second NFL season this year). The Cowboys have a tough regular season schedule.

  • Key-players: Ezekiel Elliott (RB), Dak Prescott (QB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 10 or more.

Arizona Cardinals: The Cardinals had a bad season last year, ending the regular season with a record of 7 wins and 8 losses, but finishing strong. The team is pretty solid in all positions and their schedule is easy.

  • Key-players: Carson Palmer (QB), Larry Fitzgerald (WR).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 10 or more.

Atlanta Falcons: The Falcons had a great season last year, only losing the Super Bowl after New England’s colossal comeback. They have an amazing attacking power (best of the past season) even if it will be difficult to offer the same offensive quality they showed last year; their defense is not exceptional.

  • Key-players: Matt Ryan (QB), Julio Jones (WR).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 11 or more.

Baltimore Ravens: After an anonymous season last year (8 wins and 8 losses), Raven’s schedule is not too hard this year, the team is average in both attack and defense.

  • Key-player: Joe Flacco (QB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 8 or more.

Buffalo Bills: The Bills are no elite team, but they become quite good when they play at home.  Last season’s record: 7 wins, 9 losses.

  • Key-player: Tyrod Taylor (QB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 7 or more.

Carolina Panthers: The Panthers come from a very poor season (6 wins, 10 losses), but they have very good potential: strong attack led by one of the best quarterbacks in the league. Very solid defense and a few key players: the outright winner odds are 26; a possible surprise.

  • Key-players: Cam Newton (QB), Greg Olsen (TE).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 10 or more.

Chicago Bears: One of the weakest teams in the NFL, pretty weak attack and defense. Even their quarterback, Trubisky, is a rookie; the whole team is to be discovered.

  • Key-player: Mitchell Trubisky (QB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 3 or more.

Cincinnati Bengals: Just an average team that did so so in the past season (ending with a record of 6-9). Pretty average in all positions but they drew a lucky schedule.

  • Key-player: Andy Dalton (QB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 8 or more.

Cleveland Browns: The worst team of the previous season: pretty weak both defensively and offensively. They made a nice acquisition as they brought Osweiler to Ohio, but cut him after the preseason.

  • Key-player: Sammie Coates (WR), Josh Woodrum (QB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 2 or more.

Denver Broncos: Their strength is their defense. The offense is good but still need to be tested. Broncos’ starting quarterback, Siemian, left a good mark last season but on the other side the schedule is not easy.

  • Key-player: Trevor Siemian (QB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 9 or more.

Detroit Lions: A team full of prospects that normally falls short of expectations. A powerful offense and a pretty weak defense plus a complicated calendar. Their key players are very talented.

  • Key-players: Matthew Stafford (QB), Golden Tate III (WR).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 7 or more.

Green Bay Packers: One of the best teams in the league. Strong quarterback and offense, surely their defense is their weakness. The Packers are one of the candidates for the final victory.

  • Key-players: Aaron Rodgers (QB), Jordy Nelson (WR).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 12 or more.

Houston Texans: A very strong defensive team; one of the best teams of the past season but very weak offensively. Many doubts on their quarterback Savage, who will be tested this year.

  • Key-player: J.J. Watt (DE).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 8 or more.

Indianapolis Colts: Low level team, pretty weak offense and defense. They were disappointing last season and did not match the expectations. They have a good schedule.

  • Key-players: Andrew Luck (QB), Frank Gore(RB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 8 or more.

Jacksonville Jaguars: The Jaguars did not have a good season last year and fell short of expectations. Good potential but a very weak defense, they drew a nice calendar.

  • Key-player: Blake Bortles (QB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 5 or more.

Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs are a strong team; good defense and a very strong offense. They have always made the playoffs in the past 3 seasons, they need to step up to be competitive at the next level.

  • Key-players: Alex Smith (QB), Travis Kelce (TE).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 10 or more.

Los Angeles Chargers: Just an average team with a good quarterback (Rivers) that did well last season, unfortunately the team could not properly support him, especially defensively.

  • Key-player: Philip Rivers (QB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 6 or more.

Los Angeles Rams: Overall a weak team especially when it comes to their offense. Rams’ defense it not good either. Their quarter back is a good prospect (22 years old) and their biggest player.

  • Key-player: Jared Goff (QB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 4 or more.

Miami Dolphins: Dolphins’ season started in the worst way; their quarterback, and best player, who carried them to two straight playoff appearances in the last two season got injured and will miss two months in the regular season. His backup, Cutler, is not at the same level. Their schedule is good, especially the start of the season.

  • Key-players: Ryan Tannehill (QB), Jay Ajayi (RB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 7 or more.

Minnesota Vikings: Their situation is similar to Miami’s; Bridgewater, the starting quarterback, is injured. He missed the whole last season and is expected to miss at least 6 weeks when this season starts. Minnesota can count on defense, surely their strength, while the offense is just average.

  • Key-player: Sam Bradford (QB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 6 or more.

New Orleans Saints: An extraordinary offense (2nd best in the last season) while their defense is surely their biggest weakness. The Saints made a big acquisition with Peterson (running back). They could have a good season, but their schedule is pretty though at the start.

  • Key-players: Drew Brees (QB), Adrian Peterson (RB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 10 or more.

New York Giants: A good all around team, with no particular weakness. They possibly have the best wide receiver in the league (Beckham jr) and a good quarterback. Experts give the Giants chances of being this season’s real surprise.

  • Key-players: Odell Beckham Jr (WR), Eli Manning (QB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 10 or more.

New York Jets: A weak team with 2 good reinforcements this season; Kearse (WR) and Catanzaro (kicker) will surely make the Jets a better team.

  • Key-players: Josh McCown (QB), Jermaine Kearse (WR).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 4 or more.

Oakland Raiders: The Raiders have a big offensive potential, with strong offensive players like Carr (QB) and Cooper (WR). Plus they added one of the best running back in the league, if not the best, Lynch. Their defense is surely their real weakness. Schedule is tough for them.

  • Key-players: Derek Carr (QB), Amari Cooper (WR), Marshawn Lynch (RB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 11 or more.

Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles are an average team, no strengths and a quarterback, Wentz who has the keys to the game. They had a big acquisition in running back position: Sproles.

  • Key-players: Carson Wentz (QB), Darren Sproles (RB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 7 or more.

Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers are good; guided by the experienced, and strong, quarterback Roethlisberger and a very powerful running back (Bell, among the league’s bests with Lynch). They got a very easy schedule.

  • Key-players: Ben Roethlisberger (QB),  Le’Veon Bell (RB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 12 or more.

San Francisco 49ers: The 49ers are weak at both ends (offense and defense). Their wide receiver, Garcon, is surely their strongest weapon.

  • Key-player: Pierre Garçon (WR).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 3 or more.

Seattle Seahawks: A strong team at both ends. Their quarterback, Wilson, is a huge talent and their tight end, Graham is strong too. Seahawks’ schedule is good.

  • Key-players: Russell Wilson (QB), Jimmy Graham (TE).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 12 or more.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The Buccaneers are a though team; good potential (especially when they play at home), but their defense could concede and become a problem. Thier quarterback, Winston, is their brightest talent and their schedule is pretty unlucky and complicated.

  • Key-player: Jameis Winston (QB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 6 or more.

Tennessee Titans: The Titans are an average team with a good defense (their strength) and a mediocre offense, guided by the non consistent quarter back Mariota. Their running back, Murray is their main offensive weapon. They drew a particularly easy schedule.

  • Key-players: Marcus Mariota (QB), DeMarco Murray (RB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 9 or more.

Washington Redskins: The Redskins are just an average team and their were not particularly lucky with their schedule, which is pretty difficult.

  • Key-player: Kirk Cousins (QB).
  • Expected wins in regular season: 6 or more.
